A Timeline of Textiles and Creative Use Materials

In a society that is based on material development, you can’t ignore the role that textiles and creative use materials exist in every facet of the material world. Be it, political, economical, educational or sociological, textiles and creative use materials are an essential element of the past, present and future of human existence.

This blog entry is food for thought as the world looks to technology and less material exploits of the human condition. The challengers of the material world look to machines, rather than the skilled acquisition of the human mind and hand.

The timeline of textiles and creative use materials is not an analogous observation as much as it is an approach to better understand of the necessity of textiles and creative use materials to the development of the world.

Looking forward to the next few blog post in 2024 and the update and archive of my previous blog post spanning the last 10 years, the first textile that is relevant to this blog post and the world today is gauze. As we watch what is happening in the Gaza Strip, we’ll also explore the timeline of the textile  production of gauze in Gaza, and how this textile transformed into not only a creative use material, but an essential medical material that is interwoven within the Manslow Hierarchy of Need and precedes the psychology of how we create textiles and creative use materials from a pre-colonial perspective.

A little Info About Seed to Fibre

am a self taught nuno felter. I learned the basics felting technique by watching a demo at the Georgia Fiber Festival at Callaway Gardens. I researched nuno felting and took a private lesson where I learned about wool fibers and silk hankies. My first scarf made was displayed at Vickers Wife during the December Art March in 2015. In 2016 I participate in Tybee Art Association Art Show, where Lisa Ocampo from the Telfair Museum Gift Store approached me about my work and asked me if I'd like to do a Trunk Show for the museum members. My first trunk show was in the spring of 2016. Currently scarves are for sale at the Museum Gift Store. I was also a featured item in the 2016 Savannah Magazine Gift Guide for a hand dyed nuno felt scarf.

The summer of 2017, I started the Seed to Fibre Textile Art Program as a pilot in Savannah. Savannah Honors Academy was the first school to go through a 7 month program where they took 2 field trips to Oatland Island, started a school garden, and learned about the Seed to Fibre Process. They also performed the Story of the Silkworm at the Oatland Island Shhep to Shawl and started the art work for the upcoming Bombxy Mori Moth Exhibit to be on display this year at the 2019 Sheep to Shawl Event.

Moving from a pilot to an active program, I have serviced over 200 children between grades K-6 and developed a curriculum to introduce children to animal, plant and insect fibres used to make textiles and textile art. I am not a non profit, but work with non profits, schools and organization to engage learners and people interested in building skills to create textiles and textile arts.
